Québec and Japan—Québec’s Footprints in Japan

[YOKOSO]

Ms. Claire DERONZIER
Former Delegate General of Québec in Tokyo
President of the Council for the Promotion of La Francophonie in Japan

From the outset, I would like to say that it has been a great pleasure and a unique experience to live in Japan since 2013 and certainly a real honor to represent Québec. My husband and I have visited Japan from East to West, from Sapporo to Ishigaki Jima. We appreciated the Japanese culture and the people: their kindness and their curiosity in regards to different cultures.

Québec-Japan relations have really been strengthened during these four years as important progress has been achieved in terms of exports as well as scientific and cultural exchanges. The improvement in institutional relations and cooperation has also been significant.

Indeed, annual exports from Québec to Japan have seen a raise of 37% between 2013 and 2016. Also, Québec has for the first time signed an agreement with a Japanese prefecture, Kyoto, which will allow for great collaboration and the development of closer ties between our two societies. And good news! Air Canada has recently announced a new direct flight between Montreal and Tokyo beginning in the summer of 2018.

New promising fields linked to innovation like artificial intelligence and multimedia entertainment are booming. Culture is also growing and we are now associated to Tokyo Wonder Site for a new program of reciprocity with the coming of Japanese artists in Québec.

My mandate as the Déléguée générale du Québec in Japan has come to an end and it is with a head full of amazing memories and a heart full of emotions that I am getting ready to leave Japan. I will now start a new adventure in Paris where I will continue to serve Québec within the Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie, most notably in projects of gender equality.

It represents the pursue of my engagement and the efforts I have put in as the president to the Conseil pour la promotion de la Francophonie here in Japan, as well as my work in favor of equality during my whole career.

I would like to thank everyone for their great support and friendship and I hope we will get to keep working together in my new function.
