H.E. Dr. Bashir MOHABBAT
Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary
of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan to Japan
I would like to express my sincerest gratitude on behalf of the people and government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan for Japan’s great and unceasing assistance, cooperation, and efforts toward the reconstruction and self-sustainability of our nation. The diplomatic relation between both our countries was established in 1931 and since then friendly relations have been established creating a strong bond.
I came to Japan in 1976 as a foreign student from Afghanistan when I was 19 years old and managed to eventually obtain a PhD. After I joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Afghanistan, my diplomatic career was mainly focused in Japan, since my first assignment was as the Second Secretary with the Embassy of Afghanistan in Tokyo in 2003. I received the honor of becoming the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Japan in July, 2017.
Afghanistan is known to be very rich in natural resources. The United States Geological Survey confirmed rich deposits and reserves of fuel and non-fuel mineral resources including rare earths, rare metals, and precious stones in Afghanistan. The Afghan government offers a big welcome for potential investment from Japan. And I will endeavor to bring investment from Japan to Afghanistan.
In 1971, Their Imperial Highness the Crown Prince and the Crown Princess of Japan at that time visited Afghanistan for the first time. Back then Afghanistan was a kingdom and the Afghan Royal Family and Japanese Imperial Family established a very warm and close relationship.
Forty-two years have passed since my first visit to Japan and my life here is longer than the one I had in Afghanistan. I have met so many wonderful people during these years. Without the education and encounters with people in Japan, I would not be here today. I am making every effort to work as a bridge between Japan and Afghanistan, connecting “heart to heart” the people of both countries (as an ambassador of “heart to heart”) in return for what I have received from both countries.
