In what is perhaps a surprising business move, online retailers Amazon are set to open a new bar in Tokyo which will open on the 20th of October.
It will be located in the stylish Ginza area and is unlike your standard bar with menus and bartenders. Amazon’s bar anticipates the age of automation with a concept that is not entirely new to Japan, but innovative elsewhere. Each customer will have a tablet in which they will give their preferences for drinks and will receive recommendations accordingly, a feature similar to Amazon’s website.
Customers will also be served complimentary snacks and will be able to order other plates with ingredients sourced from the AmazonFresh selection.
Unfortunately, this shop will only last for 9 days and is set to close on the 29th of October. Perhaps Amazon is using this bar as a test in view of future business plans. This venture hints that Amazon is planning to be a presence on our high streets rather than just online.
Inter Media Japan’s media team will be visiting the Amazon bar. Stay tuned for more information, including pictures and reviews.
