H.E. Mr. Jaime Barberis
Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Ecuador to Japan
Allow me to start by greeting all the readers of “JAPAN and the WORLD”. I am a career diplomat with nearly 40 years of professional experience. I have served in different diplomatic and consular capacities in Vienna, Geneva, Washington, Hamburg and Budapest. Japan is my first Asian experience.
Since I arrived in Japan in March, I have had the opportunity to experience the amazing qualities that make this country so unique in the world, such as its incredible sense of hospitality, “omotenashi”; its exquisite food, its true philosophy of respect towards everyone and everything, among many other highly appreciated qualities of Japanese culture.
In 2018, Ecuador and Japan will commemorate 100 years of the establishment of diplomatic relations. This remembrance is a challenge and a great occasion to strengthen the friendly relationship between our countries. Likewise, I see it as a threshold to reach the Japanese population with information about Ecuador, as a land of investment opportunities, cultural acquaintance and pure life enjoyment in its magical four worlds: the Pacific Coast, Andean Highlands, Amazon Rainforest and the Galapagos Islands.
Within the aforesaid framework, the Embassy of Ecuador in Japan will focus on strengthening the political dialogue and the promotion of mutual high-level visits. Concerning the economic-commercial field, the embassy will continue to promote Japanese investments in key and strategic sectors of Ecuador’s economy and will continue to increase the commercial presence in Japan, especially through the participation in world fairs like FOODEX, as well as promoting trade events in Ecuador, such as the Business Matchmaking. Furthermore, the embassy, following Ecuadorian foreign policy, is committed to enhancing cooperation with public and private institutions in Japan, and to the promotion of people’s exchanges at every level.
In May 2017, a new government was inaugurated in Ecuador, and with it, the renovation of the interest in strengthening the relationship with Japan and other strategic partners. Ecuadorian President Mr. Lenin Moreno, has expressed to His Majesty the Emperor and Prime Minister Shinzo Abe the desire of his government to deepen the relationship with Japan and its people in a cooperative and mutually beneficial way. This is the path the embassy I lead is going to follow.
