Ms. Izumi Nakamitsu, the former assistant administrator of the U.N. development program crisis response unit, was appointed last week as the new Undersecretary General at the U.N. She told the press “…I will work sincerely and do my best to make the world more peaceful.” She has been described as a very dedicated and professional member of the United Nations, with expertise in a lot of the work the U.N. does.

Succeeding her predecessor, Kim Won-Soo, she is the ninth Japanese and very first Japanese woman to assume this post at the U.N. She will take charge of ongoing negotiations on concluding a treaty ban on nuclear weapons, as well as nuclear disarmament and nonproliferation.
