ZKW and Panasonic are closing up on the negotiations, the acquisition of which is expected to cost a whopping 100 billion yen. The European company, ZKW supplies leading western automobile makers such as General Motors, its main product being energy-efficient light-emitting diode headlights that are capable of illuminating at great distances.

Panasonic has a vast know-how in sensors that can be combined with ZKW’s strength in lighting to develop new technology for image recognition, especially amid the development of self-driving vehicles, which has brought about a change in headlight technology. Last year, Panasonic took a 49% stake in an automotive mirror making company, Ficosa International and both companies have started developing electronic mirrors for vehicles.
