Ms. Michaëlle Jean
3rd Secretary-General of the International Organization of La Francophonie
Hello to everyone in Japan,
As the Secretary General of the International Organization of La Francophonie, which represents countries spanning five continents—including countries in Europe, Africa, the Indian Ocean, and the Americas—it gives me a great pleasure to hear that the French language is well known and increasing in popularity throughout Japan.
I would like to extend a warm welcome to everyone in Japan with an interest and love for the French language. I firmly believe that Japan and the French-speaking world should focus on building stronger ties.
I’m sure that Japanese people are warmly welcomed by French-speaking countries, as a valuable partner in the international community. This attitude stems from a core value that is pivotal within the French-speaking world. The French language plays a vital role linking different cultures, fostering cooperation and cohesion in addressing issues, to build the future together, as well as advancing all aspects of our lives. With this in mind, it gives me great pleasure to be able to deliver this message to you all.
I am proud to say that Japanese literature, history and culture are actually part of my own life. I am originally from Canada and Japan has a strong presence in Canada. We share a common history and there are many people of Japanese descent living in Canada. So, the path to getting to know each other has already begun. I look forward to the opportunity to meet all of you in the near future. Thank you for your continued support.
